Plans for a larger community centre on the Wood Farm housing estate in Oxford have received the support of councillors.

Councillors agreed to back further development of facilities for the estate at a meeting of the city council leisure services committee.

A working party will be set up to examine all the options for development of community services.

Leisure services officer, Nichola Atkin, said: "This will now enable staff to get out and talk to people and gauge what they need."

Chairman of the committee, Cllr Jim Campbell, said: "Wood Farm is an area that has a lot of needs in terms of community facilities and compared with other areas in the city it has relatively poor facilities. This is something we want to redress.

The existing community centre is operating at full capacity. A report carried out by Woodfarm Community Association showed that bookings were being turned down for lack of space.
