Children at two Oxfordshire primary schools have been asked to design a road warning sign to improve road safety awareness.

Fuel company Jet has approached children at St Peter's CoE Primary School, Cassington, and Longfields Primary School, Bicester, to take part in its scheme.

The Jet Smile Awards for Road Safety will reward children who design the best road safety signs that could be used outside their schools, local shops, or homes to warn drivers that children may be playing outside.

Regional winners in the national competition will receive a bike and £1,000 for their school. The overall winner will win a PlayStation 2 console and an extra £1,000 for their school.

Jet is also searching for a Junior Road Safety Hero - someone who has done something special to spread the message to improve safety for children on the roads.

Jet communications manager Roy Roley said: "Forty thousand children are killed or injured on Britain's roads each year.

"We launched the award scheme to raise awareness and prevent often avoidable road accidents involving children."
