Railtrack is planning a new five-platform station in Oxford to cope with the growing amount of Rail traffic.
The company warned earlier this week that the city could miss out on vital new services if plans to move the station to Oxpens, ready for use in 2005, did not go ahead.
Railtrack are now consulting with the Strategic Rail Authority about the plans, and the city council planning committee has noted the company's proposals.
Lou Tate, of Railtrack's Great Western zone, said: "Over the next two to three years, there will be an increase in passenger traffic and also freight. Initially, we will want a bigger station with four or five platforms and that could be expanded if needs be.
"If the station remains where it is, Oxford will start to suffer a backlog of services and passengers will experience much longer journey times."
