Wolvercote is to get a village green thanks to the combined efforts of young and old residents alike.

The Wolvercote Commoners' Committee and Wolvercote Young Persons' Club have joined forces to create a green for all the villagers to use at Goose Green, off Godstow Road.

The Commoners received an Age Concern Millennium Award of £3,450 to transform the piece of land into a recreation area.

Children currently play games such as football and cricket in the streets, which has been a concern for parents.

It is hoped the new green will open before the end of the year.

Committee chairman, David Humphrey, said: "The main function of the green will be to give the Young Person's Club somewhere to practice their sport activities. So far we have cleared the land, put a gate up, got rid of all the rubbish and planted hedges. Now we have got to get the land level and make sure good drainage is in place.

"We have also got goal posts on order to make half a practice pitch for children to use."

WYPC leader, John Kempson, said: "There has been talk about a village green like this for years now and it's great news that it's finally here. It has really brought the old and young people of the village together.

"Something that doesn't happen half enough. We want the land to be used by everybody in the village. They have all certainly put the effort into turning the land into a facility they can be proud of."

Age Concern spokesman, Dave Kirkwood, said: "The award has been granted to the people of Wolvercote because the green will create a great way of getting the old and young together to reach a common objective."

The Age Concern awards, funded through the Millennium Commission with proceeds from the National Lottery, are designed for projects that bring different generations together.
