An advocacy service has been launched to represent the concerns of elderly people living in residential homes.

Age Concern is setting up the service because management of Oxfordshire County Council's 19 residential homes is due to be handed over to an external agency.

The volunteer advocates will ensure that residents have a voice in decisions affecting their lives and homes.

Michael Biddulph, spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council social services, said: "There will be changes to the homes because we have to improve the buildings to meet Government standards.

"There will be a long period of consultation for this and we want to be sure that residents of the homes understand the situation."

Age Concern is recruiting volunteers to train as advocates. No particular experience is required but a sensitivity to the rights and needs of older people is essential.
