Tour bus companies are being urged to reduce the numbers of vehicles clogging up Broad Street, Oxford.
Traders and members of the Friends of the Broad called for action at a meeting held at Trinity College to seek ways to improve the appearance of the historic street.
Jan Bliss, of the Friends, said: "At the moment there are just too many buses having to turn around in the middle of Broad Street.
"We will be writing to the bus companies and the county council about this."

Speakers also said they were disappointed that Broad Street had still not been cleared of clutter, despite complaints from university colleges and businesses.
Ms Bliss said the Friends would press for the removal of wooden flower boxes, which were described as "eyesores", and for a parking review.
She added: "In January we complained to the city and county councils about the ugly flower boxes but nothing has been done."
A second meeting to focus on traffic was held at Oxford Town Hall and attended by the bursars of Exeter and Balliol Colleges.
