The personal website of new Oxfordshire County Council leader Keith Mitchell is being hastily revised because it contains an attack on his new allies - the Liberal Democrats.

The long-serving Tory councillor has taken the top political job, and the Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups have agreed a power-sharing deal to run the council.

However, now that Cllr Mitchell has agreed to share power with the Liberal Democrats, his tongue-in-cheek website has become an embarrassment and he has decided to scrap certain sections.

Keith Mitchell shakes hands with Liberal Democrat leader Margaret Godden on Tuesday to seal a deal between the two political groups to run the county council

There will be five Conservatives and four Liberal Democrats on the ruling executive.

Both groups say they are determined to make the new system work after 16 years as a 'hung' council where decisions have been made on an ad-hoc basis between the different political groups.

But Cllr Mitchell's website reveals the political point-scoring that has taken place in the past.

On a section of the site, entitled Keith's Politically Incorrect Page, a Liberal Democrat is described as a "pseudo- communist".

The site also gives alternative terms for anyone claiming benefit - "scrounger" and a "person who lives off the taxpayer". Cllr Mitchell also cites an example of a Government employee in Washington DC who used the word niggardly - which means stingy.

The man, a homosexual, was sacked as the word was thought to have racist connotations, but reinstated after the gay rights movement lobbied on his behalf.

Cllr Mitchell observes: "Lucky he was not a member of the decent and ordinary majority."

Following his appointment as Leader of the Council, Cllr Mitchell has decided to remove the Politically Incorrect Page.

He said: "As a reflection of my appointment, I intend to change the contents of the site substantially and the Politically Incorrect section will go.

"As a council leader I can't afford to have this sort of teasing going on."

Neil Fawcett, who could be one of four Liberal Democrat councillors on the ruling executive, said he did not consider himself to be a "pseudo- communist".

He added: "I have, in the past, jokingly described Tories in all manner of ways.

"I'm grateful that Keith has decided to take this approach by removing this section of the website.

"It's a gesture which reflects a new atmosphere of co-operation."

Fellow Liberal Democrat Margaret Godden is to be the council's Deputy Leader.

The new system, which replaces the existing network of committees, will be in place by November 5.

Cllr Mitchell's website can normally be found at http://homeusers.prestel.co.uk/krmitchell/

Today visitors to the site were told it was temporarily closed for "update and re-design".

Cllr Mitchell, who has represented Bloxham since 1989, added: "It has had quite a lot of hits, but some of it was put together a couple of years ago, so it definitely needs updating."
