All Cowley-built Minis have been recalled amid fears that static electricity in the fuel tank could cause an explosion.

The 500 cars that are already on the road have been recalled. Deliveries are on hold while new vehicles in showrooms and on the production line are adapted.

BMW said there could be a small explosion in the fuel filler neck, which leads into the car's petrol tank, while using a petrol pump.

Spokesman Graham Biggs said the company did not believe this could ignite the main fuel tank but added: "We want to take absolutely no chances. There have been no fires, no explosions and no-one has been hurt."

The problem was identified by two BMW employees who were driving the new car. The problem is resolved by replacing the fuel filler neck with one that has better earthing.

There are 148 Mini dealerships across the country, including North Oxford Garage, in Long Han- borough.

Sales manager Nathan King said three Minis had been delivered by the garage so far and those had been recalled. He said it was hoped the work would be done by Wednesday.

"Of the three cars that are out there, we have spoken to the customers and they are happy," he said.

He said the showroom had taken orders for more than 100 vehicles. None of these would be affected, because changes will be made on the production line.

The new BMW Mini was launched in mid-July and the first models were delivered in the middle of last month.

By the end of the year, BMW intends to have produced 10,000 Minis for the UK market. About 5,500 cars are on order in the UK.
