Wantage put up a battling display against Lewes, going down to the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute from Shepherd.
Against a big, physical side, Wantage went close through Newport, Baker and Bedwell, while the visitors also had their chances.
The game ended in controversy when a mass brawl broke out after Kevin Read of Wantage was scythed down and then had the ball belted at him. When it all calmed down, Newport of Wantage and Beeston of Lewes were sent off.
