Gas-powered dustcarts are hitting the streets of West Oxfordshire, while the team looking after amenity areas will soon switch to gas-powered mowers.

The district council believes it is leading the way as a local authority in the changeover to more environmentally friendly fuel.

The council's depot, in Station Lane, Witney, has taken delivery of a third dustcart from Scania powered by compressed natural gas.

Several more are on order for use by the council's domestic refuse collection contractor Cleanaway.

George Kellow, cabinet member responsible for the environment, said the gas-powered dustcarts are expected to be cheaper to run than vehicles on conventional fuels.
