A builder is urging the construction industry to get hooked up to the Internet to improve their businesses.

Mr Ian Hinde, who has 25 years' experience in the industry, has set up a website for Oxfordshire builders and related services.

Ian HindeHe said: "I know that the majority of builders are using computers to some extent for accounts and estimates, even if they are not online.

"I think that they will start using the Internet once they realise that there is a locally-based service. We are launching in Oxfordshire first and using this as a template for other areas."

Builders and associated trades such as architects will be listed, with the opportunity for clients to give references or make comments.

"Builders will be able to buy materials online, there will be an auction site where they can get rid of unwanted materials, plus job adverts and a marketplace for cars, insurance and even eating places.

Mr Hinde, of Abingdon, who works as a model for TV commercials in addition to his building business, said: "I will be following an ethical policy, with no timber from unsustainable forests, for instance.

"If there are too many complaints against someone, we will remove them from the site."

The webiste - www.buildconnect-oxford.co.uk - carries a list of contractors, compiled from directories and other sources.

Anyone in the building trade, from architects to plumbers, who wants to add their details to the free listing can contact Mr Hinde at ianhinde@buildconnect-oxford.co.uk
