Oxford University student William Straw, son of Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, may be about to cause further controversy in his college career.

A national newspaper has suggested the outspoken president of New College Junior Common Room, is setting his sights higher within student politics.

It has been claimed Mr Straw has decided to run against any official Labour candidate for the presidency of the Oxford University Student Union.

If he stands as an independent, the decision could cause further embarrassment for his fathe.

William Straw first hit the headlines in early 1998 when he received a police caution for selling cannabis.

He later recovered from his disgrace by achieving top A level grades and winning a place at New College.

Earlier this year, he led a college rent strike, and was fined £55 for a sit-in protest, over tuition fees, at the Divinity School of the Bodleian Library.

Mr Straw, 21, who begins his his third year studying politics, philosophy and economics, refused to confirm whether the newspaper speculation was true.

He said: "I cannot make any comment until nominations close at the end of fourth week (November 1)."
