An amateur footballer who viciously attacked an opponent and a referee faces a period in jail after he admitted causing grievous bodily harm.

Bobby Ahmed broke the jaw, eye socket and nose of goalkeeper Mark Rose, who will have 13 screws and three metal plates in his head for life.

The 30-year-old victim spent three days in hospital, needed three weeks off work and had his jaw wired together for seven weeks.

Mr Rose, a factory worker of Farm Close, Wheatley, said he was kicked as he knelt on the floor wiping blood from his face, after an earlier attack by Ahmed.

But a jury at Oxford Crown Court ruled that when Ahmed kicked Mr Rose in the face he had not intended to cause him serious injury.

Ahmed, 22, who had four previous convictions for violence, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Rose.

He also pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault against referee Brian Coles, whom he struck after being shown the red card.

But Ahmed, of Overmead Green, Blackbird Leys, denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He claimed he had lost his temper and did not mean to hurt the goalkeeper.

Judge Mary Jane Mowat granted Ahmed conditional bail until November 23 when he will be sentenced, but warned: "Prison is virtually inevitable."

Violence had flared in the 40th minute of a match between Blackbird Leys and Great Milton, which was played at Pegasus Road, Blackbird Leys, Oxford, in February this year."

Ahmed has been banned from playing football for five years and received a £500 fine.
