A council has used the ancient tradition of tree dressing to raise awareness of the importance of trees among school children.

To promote National Tree Week, Cherwell District Council organised tree planting and tree dressing sessions in Spiceball Park, Banbury, last week.

Sue Taylor, deputy headteacher of St Mary's CofE Primary School, said: "The pupils enjoyed the tree dressing. It's important that they plant trees and look after them. If they're involved in creating wooded areas, it's less likely they will vandalise them."

Tree dressing takes place in the autumn to celebrate the harvest, or at the winter solstice to mark the coming of spring.
