Anglers are worried after vandals used an air rifle in an attack on one of their fishing grounds.

Sponsorship plaques and platforms for the disabled were damaged at State's Lagoon, near Standlake, one of the waters used by the Witney-based Newland Angling Club.

The lake has been out of action because of ice, and vandals, using a four-wheel drive vehicle, are believed to have struck at the weekend.

Brian Hooper, club chairman, said: "There is a cost to repair the damage, but it is also worrying that someone should be taking a high-powered air rifle down there.

"We cater for the disabled with special ramps and platforms they can drive up to. There is no reason at all for the damage, it is just vandalism."

The club, which has about 900 members, has notified the police who are investigating.
