West Oxfordshire councillors are still making up their minds whether to grant former Witney MP Shaun Woodward planning permission to convert barns and stables at his Sarsden estate into business units.

Two years ago Mr Woodward defected from his Conservative-held Witney constituency to the Labour Party. Last June he was elected to the safe Labour seat of St Helen's, Lancashire.

Mr Woodward and his wife, Sainsbury heiress Camilla, still live on the £4m Sarsden estate, near Chipping Norton. They also own properties in London as well as a house in St Helen's.

They want to convert the stables and other farm buildings, including an 18th century threshing barn, into eight business units together with 49 parking spaces.

Last month members of West Oxfordshire District Council's uplands planning sub-committee deferred reaching a decision until they had visited the site.

On Monday they deferred a decision again as they were worried about the size of the buildings and the impact traffic going to and from the site could have on the surrounding narrow country lanes.

Last year Mr Woodward was criticised for bidding for £62,000 of Government funding for work on other farm buildings on the estate, which he and his wife bought in 1994.
