Witney MP David Cameron yesterday launched a Commons attack on growing teacher shortages in the county.

He demanded action on two fronts. The first would be to cut the tidal wave of paperwork and bureaucracy engulfing teachers, driving many out of the profession. The second would be to provide the money and flexibility to allow schools to pay more to attract teachers.

He said the one-size-fits-all approach to public services no longer worked and extra money would be vital.

Educationalist Stephen Timms said the Government had expanded teacher training which would ease the problem of shortages.

But Tory Mr Cameron said the minister failed to answer his two central points -- the need to cut red tape and the need to pay teachers more.
