Rail travellers will face delays later this year when the Banbury to Bicester line is closed for improvement work.

Train operators Chiltern Railways has announced that Railtrack will be improving nine miles of the route, south of Aynho junction, near Banbury.

The line will be closed between April 20 and May 6.

The work will involve laying a second track on the line between Aynho and Bicester North station. The existing track will also be upgraded to raise train speeds from 70mph to 100mph.

Chiltern Railways said the work would reduce delays, improve journey times and enable more trains to run. It will complete a project to re-lay the second track on the route all the way from Princes Risborough to Aynho.

Special timetables will be published for passengers travelling north from Kings Sutton and Banbury.

London-bound services will be diverted, when possible, to run from Paddington via Oxford.

A bus service will operate between Banbury and Bicester North stations.
