Abingdon Tn 4, Clapton 0

Abingdon saw off fellow strugglers Clapton at Culham Road to record their third consecutive home Ryman Division 3 victory.

Town always seemed to have the upper hand, but they were grateful for a couple of good saves from Mickey Torres and some wayward finishing by the visitors.

Playing in a howling wind, the referee took the players off the pitch early in the second half for five minutes during a hailstorm.

Town took the lead on 18 minutes when a corner was nodded goalwards by Dave Tregurtha, and Paul Sherwood got the final touch.

Clapton missed a gilt-edged chance to draw level on the half-hour when Hussain volleyed over.

On 40 minutes, Abingdon's new signing from Thame, Chris Potter, who looked useful on the left, shot over from Thomas's cross, before Town grabbed their second goal on the stroke of half-time.

Excellent work from Potter saw him find Jason Thomas, who shot home from 12 yards.

Clapton substitute Antoniou clipped the Abingdon crossbar with a long-range chip, but Sherwood made it 3-0 after he was put clean through.

Just before full-time, Sherwood was played through again, but was brought down, and Tristan Didcock took the opportunity to bag his first league goal of the season with a perfect penalty.
