Police dealt with clashes between 30 and 50 football supporters on Oxford streets on Saturday.
The disturbances, which broke out before Oxford United's match against Exeter City, took place in the Magdalen Road area of Iffley Road.
Insp Melvyn Kendall, of Oxford police, said: "The serious public disorder problems caused significant distress to residents in Iffley Road.
"We had numerous calls from local residents."
Insp Kendall said police separated the opposing factions and escorted them to the Kassam Stadium. No-one was arrested.
There was also a strong police presence at the end of the match to prevent trouble flaring as people left the ground after United's two one defeat.
In August last year, the north stand of the Kassam Stadium was made a no-go area for Oxford United supporters after stones were thrown at visiting Rochdale supporters during the ground's grand opening.
Martin Brodetsky, co-editor of Rage On, a magazine for Oxford United fans, said: "In the past, Oxford United had a reputation for having a small hooligan element among its supporters.
"But there are now very little signs of trouble in or around the stadium during home games.
"I think there is a minority of people who use football as an excuse to create trouble."
