A fatal crash near Thame 12 years ago has resulted in scores of young drivers becoming better at the wheel.

The death of Catherine Kenyon, who was in a crash caused by a reckless driver, prompted her father, Ted, to set up a safe driving award in her memory.

That was in 1992 -- and now the tenth annual Young Driver of the Year competition is to be held at Silverstone.

Full licence holders aged between 17 and 24 can apply to enter the competition, which is run in conjunction with Thames Valley Police.

The first stage involves applicants completing 30 questions on driving matters. If successful, they go to Silverstone for a day, taking part in skidding, manoeuvring and general road tests with a police driver.

People wanting to enter are being advised to submit their entries by March 18 to guarantee a place for the contest on April 14.

Application forms are available from the Accident Investigation Unit at Aylesbury on 01296 396112 or from Mr Kenyon on 01438 715999.
