More new pedestrian crossings are being installed in Abingdon as part of the town's integrated transport strategy.

Marcham Road is to get two new crossings, one outside the hospital and the other between the Fairacres estate and Tesco.

Work on the hospital crossing is due to start in April or May, but the other crossing will not be ready until the summer.

Both will be button-operated Toucan crossings to allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross. The path along these sections of Marcham Road will be converted for shared use as a cycle track.

There will be a third, pedestrian-only crossing in Spring Road south of Park Road. The precise location will be finalised only after further talks with local residents and is not expected to be operational until the summer. The fourth crossing will be in Ock Street to the west of the new development on the old Morland brewery site, and work on that starts in April or May.

Abingdon Central county councillor Lesley Legge said: "I welcome these new crossings which are all a positive support to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists and help them get into the town more easily. "
