Controversial plans to install a £50,000 controlled parking zone in Oxford are to be drastically altered following public pressure.

Residents complained about the lack of residents' parking spaces, and excessive restrictions when they attended a public meeting to discuss the scheme at the United Reformed Church, Summertown.

Oxfordshire County Council is introducing two new parking zones to coincide with the opening of a new park-and-ride site near the Kidlington grain silo in October.

The north Oxford zone will stretch from Bardwell Road to Beechcroft Road, and the Summertown zone from Beechcroft Road to Squitchey Lane.

Residents in the Summertown zone feared the introduction of double yellow lines would leave them even fewer parking spaces than they already had.

But after the meeting, Bob Pizzey, the principal engineer overseeing the project, said: "The north Oxford zone only needs some minor tweaks but the Summertown project does not really address the residents' and some business needs. We have to say we got it wrong but we will be continuing to consult local people, to produce an overall strategy that will suit the majority of people."

He said consultation would take place over the next couple of months so that a new set of plans could be drawn up and go before the council's executive in August.
