A man was beaten so severely he was unable to open his eyes for two days and has no memory of his attackers.

His face was so swollen that it was difficult to distinguish his nose and he also suffered a deep cut to the head.

The 24-year-old was assaulted sometime between 10.45pm on Saturday and 12.40am on Sunday.

He went to the Quarry Gate pub in Headington on Saturday afternoon with a friend and watched the Grand National.

The next thing he remembers is being at his home in Field Avenue at about 12.40am on Sunday with blood over his head and a swollen face. His sister then took him to hospital. He was not drunk on the night of the assault, but cannot remember how he came to be so badly beaten up. He cannot recall having an argument or fight with anyone.

His friend left him near Johnson's Cafe on Watlington Road at about 10.45pm on Saturday and the pair parted to walk home.

The victim, who has not been named, spoke to officers on Tuesday about the attack. He is white, heavily built, 5ft 8ins tall, with curly, collar-length brown hair.
