OXFORD United Reserves gave an excellent performance at Fratton Park last night to shock Portsmouth, the Avon Insurance Combination leaders, writes JON MURRAY.
Mike Ford's team included three triallists - right back Scott Gooding from Crystal Palace, left back Ryan Valentine from Everton, and defender James Okoli, who has played for the reserves once before, at Wycombe.
Jefferson Louis gave his best performance so far as United enjoyed a lot of possession in the first half.
Ian McCaldon made an important save, when it was still goalless, but Portsmouth seldom troubled him after that. Robert Lovegrove, captain of the Under 19s, opened the scoring after 25 minutes, heading home a free-kick from Manny Omoyinmi.
In the second half, Portsmouth had more possession, but substitute Adam Garner killed them off by scoring with his first touch.
The ball ricocheted off a defender, Omoyinmi poked it forward and Garner half-volleyed home from12 yards.
Oxford Utd Res: McCaldon, Gooding, Valentine, Lovegrove, Okoli, Gibbens (Ciampoli 78), Quinn, Guyett, Louis, Carbon (Garner 77), Omoyinmi. Subs not used: Cruse, Sylla, Ford.
