A couple who play an active part in Carterton life celebrate their golden wedding anniversary today.

Michael Bulley and his future wife, Dee, met at grammar school during the Second World War after she was evacuated to St Ives, Cambridgeshire.

Mr Bulley, 71, served in the RAF for 26 years. After he retired, he had a wood turning business and the couple made their home in Swinbrook Road, Carterton.

Mr Bulley is a welfare officer for the Royal Air Forces' Association for Oxfordshire and the local branch of the Royal British Legion. He is also maintenance manager for the town's open air swimming pool and a keen gardener. For the last 22 years, Mrs Bulley has been involved in local government, on both Carterton Town Council and Oxfordshire County Council. She has been town mayor five times,

Both are governors of Gateway Primary School. Mrs Bulley plays the organ at St John's Church. She said: "Some days the only time we see each other is as I come in through the door and he goes out."

The couple have three children and five grandchildren. They were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary with a party at the Witney Lakes Resort.
