Kidlington Library has been demolished in the first part of a £1.4m project to replace the building with a larger, modern facility.
Free Internet access, more books, tapes and CDs, a new range of DVDs and twice as much space are among the promised improvements for the new library, which will open, at the same Oxford Road site, in the summer of 2003.
The old, one-storey building is to be replaced by a three-storey structure. The library will remain on the ground floor and double in size from 154sq m to 315sq m, with more shelving and IT equipment.
A day care centre for adults with learning difficulties will be added on the ground floor and the upper floors will be used by the county council's highways department, replacing offices in Bicester and Witney. Andrew Coggins, the county librarian, said: "I very much look forward to this new exciting project coming to fruition after so many years in the planning."
