A North Oxford man imprisoned and beat his 84-year-old mother and pulled plastic bags over her head in an attempt to blackmail her out of £120,000, a court heard.

Oxford Crown Court was told that Julian Davies, 47, of Hamilton Road, Oxford, claimed an unwanted phone call from his mother, Thelma Davies, cost him £120,000 as it interrupted and ruined a business deal. He denied charges of grievous bodily harm, blackmail and false imprisonment, yesterday.

Ian Acheson, prosecuting, said on October 15 last year Davies attacked Mrs Davies at his home, breaking her shoulder and finger. He pulled plastic bags over her head and threatened to kill her.

Mrs Davies was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital where she was treated by Dr Benjamin Burston. He said Mrs Davies had a broken bone in her left shoulder.

Nigel Daley, defending, said she suffered from osteoporosis, which made her bones brittle.

The trial continues.
