A charity which fights for the rights of pensioners is in desperate need of volunteers to operate a vital help-line.

Since moving its headquarters to Abingdon, Oxfordshire's Age Concern branch has struggled to maintain its Phone Link service.

The charity quit Oxford, forced out by the sale of the Rivermead Rehabilitation Centre, and now operates from offices in West St Helen Street, Abingdon.

Many of the 30 staff and volunteers who worked in Oxford moved to Abingdon, but five of the six Phone Link volunteers were unable to transfer.

Chris Mullins, Phone Link co-ordinator, said: "We are down to one operative at the moment, who covers for Mondays, and we hope to be able to recruit another person for Thursdays. But we are in desperate need of more volunteers, so we can offer a service on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Our service provides lonely, frail and housebound older people with contact to the outside world."

"We are seeking volunteers who can spare two hours at weekday afternoons, once a week or every fortnight. Training will be given."

Chief executive Mary Daniel added: "We shall keep the kettle on for a cup of tea, or coffee, for any elderly person who is passing, who is in need of help and advice."
