TV viewers will get their first sight of the new-look Central News South when they tune in tonight.

Changes to the main 6pm programme and bulletins represent the biggest revamp since the show began more than 13 years ago.

New music and opening titles, featuring scenes of Oxford and the BMW car plant in Cowley, are among the changes being introduced.

A bigger set has also been created at the programme's Abingdon studio.

Editor Ian Rumsey said there would be more news stories, investigations and features as well as greater interaction with the audience.

But, despite the alterations, the show's presenters -- Wesley Smith, Anne Dawson and Hannah Stewart-Jones -- will remain in place.

Mr Smith, who has been on the show since it began, said: "There have been several changes in the past but this is the biggest and most ambitious. It's going to be very exciting."

For the next three weeks, there will be a series of competitions to herald the relaunch and prizes include a new car and holiday for four in Cyprus.

Mr Rumsey said: "There will not be a huge change to the type of stories we cover but the approach will be more original and modern.

"What we absolutely do not want is to make viewers think that they are getting something alien. We already have a very successful format."

He added: "These changes have been a real team effort, with people working around the clock and giving their ideas. Every single person has contributed and it's a very exciting time for everyone."
