Schoolchildren are being asked to help organise the Banbury Show by designing a poster and naming the show's mascot.

Primary school pupils in the town can name the character in the show's logo, and secondary school students can draw a poster to publicise the event, which takes place on the weekend of June 15 and 16 in Spiceball Park.

The closing date for entries is next Tuesday.

The show will be Banbury's premier event of 2002 and, for the first time, will be a two-day extravaganza. It will also be the town's official celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The entertainment starts at 5pm on Saturday, June 15 with an open-air pop concert in Spiceball Park. From 7pm to 8.15pm, rock 'n' roll band Wild will keep toes tapping with music from some of the rock 'n' roll legends Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis.

From 8.45pm until 10pm, electric folk rock band Prussian Blue will keep the night alive, before the concert ends with a spectacular firework display.

The following day, the park will be the venue for It's A Knockout, a spin-off from the popular TV series.

Co-ordinator Andrew Horswill is looking for up to 20 teams of eight to 10 people to take part, and win £200 for charity.

He said: "There has been a terrific response and a number of teams have some forward. But there is still room for more."
