Football fans watching England's early morning World Cup games in Wallingford pubs are being asked not to ruin the town's Jubilee celebrations.

Three pubs want special licences so fans can see matches, starting with England's first game, at 10.30am on Sunday, June 2.

Magistrates in Oxford expect further applications in the next few days.

But Wallingford town councillor Dee Cripps, who is helping co-ordinate Jubilee celebrations in the town, is concerned.

She told the council: "We're organising what is very much a family celebration and we are expecting hundreds of people, many of them children, to be around from early on. It'd be dreadful if we got a spill-out of football fans who had been drinking for hours.

"Any trouble would be a very bad advert for Walling- ford.

"I don't want to be a killjoy, but early morning drinking over that weekend worries me a great deal.

"Many of our events are on the river and we know too well that problems can arise from people jumping from the bridge."

The debate arose after Joanna Hill, joint licensee of the Town Arms in High Street, wrote to the council requesting its support for a special licence application.

Wallingford mayor Nigel Moor said the council should not oppose the pub's bid.

But he added: "We're asking all the fans to be aware that there are many people outside enjoying the Jubilee weekend.

"We are asking them to behave responsibly and to keep it cool, whether their teams win or lose.

"That way they can enjoy the games and others can enjoy the Jubilee celebrations without interference and without unpleasantness."
