Drayton Park carried off one of the most prestigious titles in Oxfordshire junior golf when they won the Smedley Shield for the first time at North Oxford.

A total of 81 youngsters from 14 clubs in the county competed for the shield, which is a team event with five out of six handicap scores to count.

Drayton, boosted by a nett 62 from 21-handicapper Eddie Pepperell, recorded a total of 330 to squeeze home by three shots from previous winners Chipping Norton.

Despite the heavy rain, there were some good scores. The individual nett prize went to Matthew Price, of Chipping Norton, with a nett 63 off a 16 handicap, on countback from Alistair Haynes, of Studley Wood.

The individual best gross was won by three-handicap- per John Cronly, of Frilford Heath, with a great round of 70.
