North Oxford B toughed it out when it mattered as they came from behind to earn a 5-4 win at Woodstock A in Mixed Division 1 of the OLTA Wilson Inter-Club 3-Pair League.
Woodstock were 4-2 down going into the final rubbers. Four of the previous six had been halved with Woodstock's first pair, Liz Gilkes and Manoj Gujral, notching wins over North's second and third pairs.
But when it came to all of the pairings meeting their opposite numbers, North Oxford stepped up a gear.
Madeleine Mitchell and Nick Beale ground out a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Gilkes and Manoj Gujral.
Evelyn Swift and Rupert Beale eased past Samantha and Pramod Gujral 6-3, 6-2, and third pair Sue Duff and Richard Brailsford completed the excellent comeback by battling to a 7-5, 6-2 victory over June Goncalves and Anumod Gujral.
In Division 2, Abingdon B were beaten 6.5-2.5 at Thame A with their first pair, Dawn Torgerson and Steve Robson, losing all three rubbers.
Third pair Andrew Kaminski and Clare Carder did the business for Thame, collecting 2.5 rubbers, which included a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Abingdon's top pair.
Banbury A overwhelmed visiting Kings Sutton 8.5-.5, with Kings Sutton hardly doing themselves any favours by having only two pairs.
First pair Colin Lynes and Judy Canning won the best rubber of the match, overcoming their opposite numbers, Roger Eastoe and Stephanie Browne, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.
3-PAIR LEAGUE
Mixed Div 1: Woodstock A 4, North Oxford B 5. Div 2: Banbury A 8.5, Kings Sutton .5; Thame A 6.5, Abingdon B 2.5.
