The cost of installing CCTV cameras in south Oxfordshire town centres is to be re-examined by the district council.

On July 11, South Oxfordshire District Council's cabinet will look at the financing of the scheme before deciding on its future.

Wallingford, Thame and Henley want the cameras as an aid against crime and hooliganism and all of the town councils have agreed to provide joint funding with local business groups.

Didcot will not join the district council scheme as it will have cameras installed as part of the redevelopment of the town centre.

The three towns are all concerned about the high cost of the cameras and the length of time -- 10 years -- the district council wants them to commit funds.

The schemes in the three towns have different numbers of cameras and different costings but none is happy about the overall package. The district council has offered to pay the cost of installation, but expects the town councils to find a third of the annual running costs every year.

The monitoring would be done in a Vale of White Horse District Council centre in Abingdon.

That council is looking at its final costings and they will go to South Oxfordshire District Council cabinet next month.
