Police are treating a fire at a former Oxford country club over the weekend as arson, and are calling for anyone who saw anything suspicious to come forward.

The blaze at Old Minchery Farm Country Club, in Grenoble Road, Littlemore, broke out at about 9.45pm on Friday, August 23.

The club, which is no longer open, is owned by Oxford United chairman Firoz Kassam.

Four fire engines were called out to the blaze in the roof of the now derelict building.

No-one was hurt, but it is believed the fire was caused deliberately and police forensic experts are scouring the scene for evidence.

Firefighters battled for almost five hours to contain the blaze, which was finally brought under control at 2.25am.

Oxford CID are investigating the incident and appealed for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area, or around the nearby Priory and Question Mark public house, to come forward.

Anyone with information should call Dc Steve Jones on 01865 266333 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
