SOUTH LEAGUE DIVISIONS 1 & 2: Rover Oxford marked their return to Division 1 in the best possible way with a 5-2 drubbing of last season's promotion candidates Bicester.

Rover goalkeeper Rob MacDougal dives full length to push a shot wide

Bicester forced two early short corners, but failed to convert them and were punished ten minutes in when Kevin Wharton scored after a Toby Langdon shot was saved.

Danny Hughes equalised from the narrowest of angles, but this proved the catalyst for Rover to raise their game.

Danny Bleach deflected a Gerald Curran cross high into the net and added a second before the break, beating the advancing keeper to complete a sweeping move started by right back Duncan Buckmaster.

Rover had the game won within 15 minutes of the restart with two more open play goals.

Wharton poached his second and Mervin Poole made it 5-1 with a reverse stick shot after good work by Drew Vermeulen.

Hughes grabbed a late consolation with a fine reverse stick effort of his ownl.

Abingdon and Witney shared the points at Tilsley Park in a fast-moving, but rather scrappy 3-3 draw in Division 2.

Abingdon opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Kev Smith rounded the keeper to score from a narrow angle.

However, two goals from Witney, one either side of half-time, saw the vistors take the lead.

Paddy Daniel equalised from the first short corner and striker Mike Godwin gave Witney the lead when he struck home from the edge of the area.

But Abingdon fought back and goals from Ron Smith and Dan Cane-Honeysett looked like securing the three points for the home side until Witney captain Steve Bates equalised ten minutes from the end.

Wallingford, sporting a new formation which bolstered the midfield and attack, crushed Windsor 6-2.

They went 1-0 up when Richard Hawson put Angus Jones through with a one-touch pass and his shot from the top of the D gave the keeper no chance.

A bad pass across the Wallingford D let in Windsor to equalise, but Wallingford were ahead again within five minutes when Rees scored from a short corner.

Windsor levelled for a second time from a short corner, but Wallingford restored their lead with Richard Pool converting another short corner to make it 3-2 at half-time.

In the second half, Wallingford outplayed Windsor.

Jones added to his tally with another strike from the top of the D, and Hawson finished off a string of passes to roof the ball into the top of the net.

John Rees completed the scoring by deflecting home an airborne shot from Jones.
