OXFORD'S Lord Mayor Gill Sanders and Sheriff Pat Stannard took part in an ancient ceremony to inspect the city walls in the grounds of New College.

The tradition dates back to 1379 when King Richard II gave the Bishop of Winchester leave to purchase the land.

As a condition of the Royal Grant, the college has to keep the city walls in good repair, and every three years the Lord Mayor has to inspect them in case they need repairing.

Mrs Sanders said: "As I am afraid of heights I found the experience terrifying but I am pleased I have done it.

"There were one or two points along the wall where I suggested there should be repairs.

"This is an important tradition. The walls are in an important part of Oxford and we should try to preserve them."

Dr Sutherland said: "The college will see to it if there are any necessary repairs. We did not see any major damage and the wall seems in pretty good shape."
