Bogus officials conned their way into a mother's house and carried out an examination of her two-year-old child.

E-fit images of the two women

Detectives fear they may strike again and have warned parents in Oxfordshire to be on their guard.

The three callers -- two women and a man -- claimed to be a nurse and two social workers and showed the mother fake identification.

They were allowed into the house in Berinsfield after claiming they were investigating a complaint of sexual abuse.

The mother allowed them to examine her son. They then left.

She became increasingly suspicious and later called the police.

Dc Chris Hand, of Abingdon CID, said: "This is something of great concern to us.

"These people were claiming to be social workers and a nurse and managed to get into a house with false ID and examine a child.

"His mother was very concerned, as are we."

He added: "Be alert, be vigilant and if someone comes to the door, to check their identification thoroughly.

"If you are not happy, don't let them in, but call the police."

He said the case was not being linked to two previous incidents of attempted child abduction in Witney and Oxford.

Phil Hodgson, assistant director of Oxfordshire County Council's social services department, said: "I was very shocked to hear of this incident. The family have had a terrible experience. "Real social workers would never work in this way. All social workers carry ID and anyone who is suspicious of a caller should always ask to see it, and refuse admission if in any doubt."

He said social workers would always make an appointment before a visit and would not call unannounced.

Detectives have appealed for any witnesses to the incident on October 1 to contact them and have released e-fit images of the two women.

The man was described as white, about 5ft 9ins tall, in his late 30s or early 40s, of stocky build and with broad shoulders.

He had dark brown or black medium length hair, which was spiky on top and swept back. He had a dark complexion, a square face, wide jaw line and was clean shaven.

He was wearing a pink shirt, blue tie and cream trousers with black shoes.

The first woman is white, with a pale complexion, and in her late 30s or early 40s. She is slim, around 6ft tall, and had collar length ash blonde hair, with a fringe.

She was wearing silver framed spectacles, a blue blouse top with black formal trousers and black flat shoes.

The bogus nurse was white, about 30-years-old, with a round face, and long brown hair which went past her waist and was tied in a pony tail.

She was wearing a dark blue nurse's uniform with a belt and a watch on her breast pocket, with black tights and black shoes.

The man and the first woman were seen getting out of a blue Ford Mondeo hatchback.
