The Atomic Energy Authority has been undertaking risk assessments of companies at the Harwell Laboratory site in the light of the threatened firefighters' strike.

The Harwell International Business Centre has its own emergency services -- including two fire engines -- providing 24-hour cover for the 750-acre hi-tech business park, which includes nuclear waste storage, decommissioned test reactors, and other nuclear facilities.

The joint fire and ambulance service is operated by the management services company Scion, and none of the dozen or so combined fire and paramedic team are members of the Fire Brigades' Union.

Harwell UKAEA spokesman Nick Hance said: "The site emergency service is equipped for a range of chemical and other fires -- including emergencies involving radioactivity."

They have a capability of dealing with any fire emergency lasting up to 30 minutes before it would be necessary to call the emergency services.
