We are pleased to hear that pupils and teachers at Windale Primary Schooll, Blackbird Leys, Oxford, are tackling school journey issues (Oxford Mail, October 23).
The problems caused by the school run and increasing traffic create problems for thousands of children in Oxfordshire.
That is why the county council is investing in Better Ways to School, which aims to help more children to walk, cycle or go by bus to school.
Some 40 schools are involved in the programme. A budget of £2m is being spent on pedestrian and cycle routes, speed limits, changes to school sites, and other improvements. The council also has a casualty reduction programme for sites with accident problems.
All schools have been invited to join the next phase of the programme and offered help in developing School Travel Plans.
Competition to join Better Ways to School is expected to be strong because most of our 370 schools face the same problem -- too many cars at the school gate and on routes to school.
Windale Primary's initiative in involving pupils to find a solution is commendable.
Whether they travel on foot, by bicycle or by car, children experience the school run at first hand. They are tomorrow's travellers and have a lot to contribute to today's transport debates.
