Lizzie Jelfs and Joe Cartledge are the new Oxfordshire singles champions.

Lizzie JelfsJelfs rolled back the years to regain the ladies' title she last won in 1991, beating defending champion Lucy Collinson 6-3, 7-6 in a thrilling final at Abingdon's White Horse Leisure & Tennis Centre.

And 16-year-old Cartledge made history when he was crowned the youngest-ever winner of the men's singles after a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Iain MacDonald at the same venue.

Jelfs reached the final with a straightforward 6-0, 6-0 victory over Amanda Carreras - a potential star of the future - after the 11-year-old had beaten Beth Simmons and former County Week player Melanie Hayes to reach the last four.

Six-times winner and defending champion Collinson reached the final with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gina Liverton.

And the spectators were then treated to a superb finale, with Jelfs and Collinson producing some high-class tennis.

In the end, the experience of Jelfs won the day, holding her nerve at 5-5 in the second-set tie-break to win the next two points and win only her second title, 11 years after landing her first.

In the men's event, Cartledge had to be at his best throughout to claim the title.

The Headington teenager came through a tight clash with North Oxford clubmate Jon Hamilton 6-4, 7-6 to reach the semi-finals, before winning the 'battle of the lefties' 6-3, 6-4 against Christian Peterson.

sprang an upset when he beat Jonathan Maskens 7-6, 6-3 in the last four.

And things were looking good for MacDonald when he took the first set against Cartledge 6-4. But the youngster levelled the match, taking the second set 6-1.

Cartledge then raced into a 4-1 lead in the decider with a double break of serve, only to falter badly and let MacDonald level at 4-4.

But it was then the turn of MacDonald to slip up, and this time Cartledge made no mistake, winning the next two games to take the title.
