Trees on Horspath village green, which have recently been targeted by vandals, are now protected.

Previously the parish council was powerless to protect the trees from vandals.

But now that a tree preservation order has been confirmed, anyone damaging the trees will be prosecuted.

The order was confirmed by South Oxfordshire District Council northern area planning committee.

Shirley Woodock, clerk of the parish council, told the committee: "They add to the overall beauty of the village green but they have been subjected to mindless vandalism.

"The protection order means we can take legal action against any vandalism. We want to preserve them as a major amenity for present and future generations."

Local member Stella Edwards said: "They are so beautiful and are an essential part of the character of the village."

Two were planted to commemorate royal coronations in 1937 and 1953. Two neighbours objected because of concerns about the size and safety of the trees.
