An Oxfordshire farm shop has scooped one of the country's apple pie champions awards -- but it was pipped at the post for the top spot by a pub in north Wales.

Harry Hudson

Millets Farm in Frilford, near Abingdon, won the south west regional heat of the National Bramley Apple Pie Champs competition.

A total of 150 chefs from around Britain entered.

The Millets Farm recipe -- cooked up by bakery manager Harry Hudson -- was selected by the Women's Food and Farming Union representatives who judged the regional heats.

The judges said they liked the pie's "homemade look and delicious taste -- the ideal pudding to follow a Sunday roast."

But top prize went to the The Groes Inn, near Conwy, in north Wales.

Mr Hudson, 49, from Borrowmead Road, Northway, Oxford, said he used no secret recipe and anyone could cook his award-winning pie.

He inherited the recipe when he joined Millets seven years ago.

He added: "It is based on self-raising flour, white shortening and water.

"The important thing is that we use only top quality, fresh ingredients.
