A former Abingdon GP, and country sports enthusiast, has died at the age of 84.

Dr Jack Cherry moved to Abingdon in 1952 and a year later was one of the original six doctors at the old Malthouse surgery. He practised in Abingdon and surrounding villages until his retirement and was a well respected figure in the town.

He was a governor of the Christ's Hospital charity for over 30 years and a past Master of the organisation. Dr Cherry was also chairman of the Abingdon Monday Club, a social club for disabled children and each year he acted as Father Christmas.

A member of the Abingdon Rotary Club, Dr Cherry, who lived in Park Road, Abingdon, was what one close friend described as "a very energetic" man who enjoyed country pursuits.

He was a keen swimmer and a regular visitor to the Old Gaol leisure centre, and more recently the new centre in Audlett Drive.

Dr Cherry is survived by his wife Monica, two daughters, a son and several grandchildren. His son Tim is a GP in Banbury, and daughter Ann is also a doctor and lives in Cardiff. His other daughter, Jill, lives in South Africa.

The funeral service was held last Friday at St Helen's Church in Abingdon followed by a private cremation.
