A conker championship rounded off a pub's weekend of fundraising for people with Lupus disease.

Alan Hendron, 11, Alexander Rose, five, and Chad Hendron, 13, join in the fun

The Black's Head Inn, at Bletchingdon, near Bicester, raised £300 through the contest and a quiz.

Landlord David Raines decided to raise money for Lupus research after learning that customer Eileen Samways's 33-year-old daughter, Donna Rose, had the illness.

He said: "I hadn't heard of it before. I understand it can be diagnosed with a simple blood test but it is often mistaken for something else."

Mrs Rose was told she had rheumatoid arthritis at 18. But after being taken to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital as an emergency patient eight years later, doctors said she had Lupus.

Antibodies that usually fight infection start to attack the body, and can cause a variety of symptoms, including joint problems, blindness and a rash.

About 50,000 people suffer from this autoimmune disease.

October is Lupus Awareness Month.
