Health inspectors found that there was no substance to union claims that staff at Sainsbury's Heyford Hill store in Oxford were unable to wash their hands after a boiler broke down.

The heating system broke down about seven weeks ago and shop workers' union Usdaw had threatened to take action because it claimed staff were too cold and could not wash their hands.

Sainsbury's denied a lack of hot water.

Environmental health officers from Oxford City Council inspected the store and found that the heating problem had not affected the hot water.

Managers at the store said that the spare part which they had been waiting for had now been delivered and the boiler was working normally again.
