Public sector workers, trade union officials and anti-war campaigners from across Oxfordshire are expected to take part in a May Day demonstration in the city on Monday.

They plan to march from Bonn Square to South Park to protest against low wages, privatisation of public services and Britain's involvement in the conflict in Iraq.

Firefighters, nurses, university and council staff, and postal workers are expected to join the march, organised by Oxford and District Trades Union Council (ODTUC).

They will gather at midday to hear speakers from some of the main trade unions in Oxfordshire, before marching through the city's streets with posters to drum up support for their campaign.

ODTUC has organised the demonstration to mark International Workers' Day, celebrated every year on May Day.

Mark Sandell, vice president of the council, said public sector workers in Oxfordshire were fed up of being "walked over" by the Government.

He said: "Workers are tired of the way they are treated and the peanuts they get paid.

"ODTUC has supported anti-war protests and firefighters throughout the pay dispute, so the demonstration will be a culmination of these and other subjects affecting local workers.

"We are concerned by the privatisation of public services, particularly with the Private Finance Initiatives being used at our hospitals.

"We want to make it clear that we won't just sit back without giving workers the chance to have their say."

Representatives from the Fire Brigades Union, the Communication Workers Union, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and local government and health workers' union Unison, will be among those on the march.

ODTUC, which was set up more than 100 years ago, organised similar demonstrations in May and December last year.

Unison members will hold another demonstration in Oxford on Friday, May 9, to campaign for £2,000 cost of living allowances for public sector workers in the county.
