More than 600 rounds of ammunition have been handed in at police stations in Oxford and Cowley during the Get Guns off the Streets amnesty.

Police have been given 16 non-prohibited firearms, including two shotguns, seven air rifles and four air pistols, according to figures released yesterday.

The latest figures were produced by Thames Valley Police, after the Oxford Mail revealed more than 100 illegally-held guns had been handed in to officers in Oxfordshire.

Ch Insp Chris Parker, of Oxford police, said: "I'm very pleased with the number of firearms and ammunition handed in at stations across our police area.

"Oxford has been the scene for several serious firearms incidents, most recently the tragic shooting of a mother in front of her children in Headington.

"Whether or not this could have been avoided through this amnesty is another matter, but I'm in no doubt that getting illegally-held guns off the streets is the first step to a safer society."

The amnesty finished on Tuesday (April 29). Police have warned they will clamp down on anyone caught with an illegal gun.
