A man who was due to appear in court on May 9 for a knife attack was found hanged at his home.

David Gardner, 21, of The Royalty, Sunderland, had admitted unlawfully wounding Matthew Rhys Jones at a party in Marsh Baldon, near Oxford, on New Year's Day.

Mr Gardner, a student at Sunderland University who had no previous convictions, was released on bail at a hearing on April 5, before Judge Anthony King at Oxford Crown Court.

However, he was found hanged on April 14 at his home.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned by the Sunderland coroner.

Peter Coombe, defending Mr Gardner last month, said there had been a significant amount of provocation before the attack, but his client wanted to send a letter of apology to his victim.

On May 2, the case was adjourned until May 16 for a death certificate to be put before the court, so the case could be formally closed.
